Results that Save Lives
The Heart and Stroke Foundation is dedicated to improving the health and quality of life for not just heart and stroke patients, but all Canadians. To realize our mission, we fund the best world-class research, which results in medical advances, social change and education that prevent and reduce death and disability from heart disease and stroke.

Reaching around the world
Heart and Stroke Foundation research being conducted at McMaster University is studying the associations between environment and genetic factors on developing conditions such as obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypertension, which are a significant cause of heart disease. This EpiDREAM study will follow nearly 16,000 people from 21 countries for a period of five years.
Speeding recovery for young heart patients
Very little research is being performed in the area of rehabilitation for children with congenital heart defects. That's why today we're funding research at the Hospital for Sick Children that will compare two different rehabilitation programs that encourage children with serious heart conditions to be more physically active after surgery. The results of this project will tell us the best way to improve the health of these children so that they remain fit and active and lead happier lives.

Reversing the effects of stroke
The Heart and Stroke Foundation is revolutionizing how we prevent and treat stroke in every province in Canada through its partnership with the Canadian Stroke Network. In addition to the research that continues to provide better diagnosis, treatment and recovery for stroke patients, the Foundation pioneered the use of a clot-busting drug that, when accessed quickly, can actually reverse its devastating effects. So for many, it's as if the stroke never occurred.
