Weight Loss Charity Challenge

Obesity and all of its associated illnesses and injuries are some of today's worst health related issues. We at Soul Fitness have set our sights on training and educating the people of our local communities on this disease and have put together a tried, tested and proven program that gets the results that our community is looking for. This program is called the WEIGHT LOSS CHARITY CHALLENGE. It is a fitness circuit that runs for 6 weeks and includes weight bearing exercises, cardiovascular work, and educational seminars. The participants that join get split into teams which are lead by certified Personal Trainers and a Nutritionist who will support and motivate participants throughout the 6 week challenge. We have found that the camaraderie and the team vs. team aspect are huge contributing factors to the success of this program. We have just wrapped up our 7th Challenge with the participants raising over $6000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. We have chosen the Heart and Stroke Foundation as our charity of choice over the past 12 months as it is about heart health and the importance of healthy nutrition and active living that we preach to our clients and participants daily.

Yvonne Lewis - Survivor, HSFO Office Volunteer & Walk Committee Member

If it wasn't for people like you, I might not be here. Let me tell you why.

On March 10, 2002, just 5 short months after my husband Richard's heart attack, I had one. Within 10 days, I had a procedure called angioplasty. Two stents were inserted into my heart to open the cholesterol-laden plaque narrowing my blood vessels, allowing for easier blood flow. I was told to quit smoking, start eating a heart-healthy diet, and exercise. I did all three!

Richard and I have now learned through seminars, brochures and from dieticians how to get and stay heart healthy, and this is all thanks to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario research.

This was not the first time that heart disease touched our lives. In 1967 when our first child, Christopher, was born with a rare heart disease, (endocardiofirbroelastosis or EFE), there was no cure for him.

At that time, a child born with his disease would only live until 2 years of age. Christopher passed away at 5 months old. Now, thanks to your donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, there is hope for a child with this disease as there is now a 66% survival rate.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario's research is currently saving more lives and contributing to a greater understanding of this disease and others.

So, as you can see, you and your family are not the only one benefiting by participating in the Halton's Family Walk for Heart&Stroke. You are also helping families like ours.

From the bottom of my patched-up heart, thank you for your support and see you at the walk on Sunday September 23rd.

Yvonne
